BPA – what is it, and what effect does it have on our bodies?

Sandy Nicholson

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical which has been associated with cardiovascular disease, breast and prostate cancer, miscarriages, metabolic and reproductive dysfunction, diabetes, as well as neurological and behavioural disorders.

BPA is the building block for polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, and is commonly found in plastic drinking bottles and baby bottles, as well as the linings of beverage and food cans. Because BPA is an unstable polymer, and is lipophilic (fat seeking) it can migrate from the bottle into the liquid or food contained therein, especially when heated. Once it has leached into the food or drink, it can move quickly into a person’s system. This should, of course, be of particular concern to mothers of childbearing age and of babies and young children.

Some tips on using plastics:

• Keep plastic out of the microwave
o Even so-called “microwave safe” plastics can leach chemicals into your food. Rather use a ceramic plate or an unbleached towel or paper napkin to cover your food.
• Avoid plastic bottled water
o Use tap or filtered water, or buy a good quality FDA approved stainless steel bottle which can be safely filled and used repeatedly forever. You will also saving a fortune on buying bottled water and most importantly, you’ll be helping to save the environment by reducing the amount of plastic that is discarded. If you do use plastic bottles in your car, never let them get warm in the sun and then drink the water – it has the same effect as putting the bottle in a microwave.
• Choose stainless steel or BPA free baby bottles or plastic cups
o Stainless steel options available from “Green2go” for babies, include the “Mudpuppy” or “One Little Green Bottle”. If you do have a plastic bottle for your baby, NEVER heat it in hot water or the microwave to warm food or milk – the BPA contained therein, will leach into the contents and straight into your baby’s system.

Currently the EU health authorities are considering a ban on BPA in babies’ bottles altogether.
