Mothers, Babies and Music

Marius Falck

Music and rhythm have been a way of communication for years. Man has an inherent rhythm and movement. Music has an important emotional and expressive value.

Music has an influence on the unborn baby. Hearing is one of the first senses that develops in the foetus and therefore it is especially sound that has an impact. The unborn baby grows the most in the last three months. Tranquil music will soothe the baby¡¦s ears; make him/her more receptive to music. This stimulus is food for the baby¡¦s brain.

After the baby is born it is at its most receptive to new ideas, input and stimuli within the first seven years. Music also plays an important role during this period. It helps with movement, some neurological connections in the brain, emotions, distinction of sounds and expression of emotions.

How to use music:
„` Play tranquil music and lead the child to say how he/she feels, to express feelings, if the child can already speak.
„` Play music and ask the child what he/she imagines, for example ¡§what do you see, what do you experience?
„` Play music and dance with your child. This way you will teach him/her to accept him/herself.
„` Play music; let your child lie on top of you on the bed, and rock to and fro. You can even use coloured material to caress your child. It will assist in creating emotions of belonging.
„` In this way music gives the child the opportunity to connect with him/her and with what he/she experiences.
